Is education – and subsequent paid labor – the key to overcoming social inequality, or does it rather contribute to the reproduction of existing power relations?
Based on the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this seminar critically examines the connection between education, work, and global justice. Starting from the Enlightenment ideal of education and work as engines of social progress, the seminar first looks at the Nazi era: with millions of forced laborers, the system of exploitation, devaluation, and extermination reached another peak. This historical perspective enables a critical reflection on the human rights formulated in 1948 – such as the right to work and education – and a transfer to the present.
